What are the routine pre-op labs? The answer is, "that depends." In an effort to reduce costs while preserving quality, we have recently re-evaluated the use of routine pre-op testing of surgical patients. Currently, in an otherwise healthy patient with no significant pulmonary or cardiac disease, no pre-op tests are necessary unless...
Exceptions
The patient is a mentstruating woman, which requires a pregancy test before elective surgery.
Thepatient is a males >40, females >50, with a strong hx or IDDM, lower these 10 years, an ECG is required within 6 months of the date of surgery.
Age, complexity of surgery factor (i.e., elderly / complex surgery may order routine labs)
