Evaluation of Angina
Contents | Prev | Next
 | The best way to assess the cardiac function of patients with stable or mild angina is to inquire about their exercise tolerance. Can they cary two grocery bags up a flight of stairs? Do they exercise at all? Are they able to performs all their own activities of daily living? Patients classified as low risk here need no further evaluation |
 | In cases where the history is unreliable, a useful test is the exercise tolerance test in which a patient is asked to walk a treadmill or turn a hand crank to simulate exercise. In these tests, attaining maximal HR is probably more important than ST segment shifts. |
 | In patient who are unable to exercise, other tests such as dipyridamole thallium imaging or dobutamine stress echo may be indicated. For more information about either of these tests, see http://www.torrancememorial.org/cardobut.htm. |
