Invasive Monitoring

Contents | Prev | Next

Invasive monitoring of the cardiovascular system is reserved for complex and sometimes prolonged operations often in patients with significant co-existing medical diseases. Intra--arterial, central venous pressure, pulmonary artery catheters (Swan-Ganz) and jugular bulb catheters are examples of invasive monitors placed and used by anesthesiologists. The risk benefit ratio and cost are important considerations in the selection of these monitors for individual patients.
