Body Temperature

Contents | Prev | Next

Appropriate equipment to continuously measure the patient's body temperature must be available and used. Body temperature often decreases 1 to 4 degrees centigrade during anesthesia and surgery performed in cold operating rooms. Shivering, when it occurs increases oxygen requirements by as much as 400%. Sites for monitoring body temperature are the esophagus, nasopharynx, rectum, bladder, and tympanic membrane.
