In selected patients, measurement of urine output can be a useful guide to intravascular fluid volume. Because GFR is dependent upon renal blood flow the rate of urine production reflects blood flow to the kidney and other vital organs. Monitoring urine output also permits early detection of hemoglobinuria, an initial sign of hemolytic transfusion reactions.
