Precordial or Esophageal Stethoscope
Contents | Prev | Next
 | A weighted precordial stethoscope is commonly applied over the suprasternal notch or heart before the induction of anesthesia and is connected with tubing to an earpiece worn by the anesthesiologist. This allows the continuous monitoring of heart and breath sounds. After intubation of the trachea, an esophageal stethoscope may be substituted. It has the advantage of close proximity to the heart and both breath sounds and heart sounds are clearly audible. These devices can facilitate early detection of (1) changes in heart rate, (2) onset of cardiac dysrhythmias, and (3) changes in breath sounds. |
