You must hold an active, full, unrestricted license in another U.S. state or Canadian province to be eligible for endorsement. Graduates of a U.S. or Canadian medical school, by law, must complete at least one year of postgraduate training in an approved program. Graduates of a medical school outside the United States or Canada, by law, must complete at least three years of training in an approved program. The cost for filing an application is $800.00. This fee is not refundable. Applications are considered confidential. Applications are not assigned until all fees are received. Due to the large number of applications pending at this time, the average applications is complete in approximately 140 days. However, each application is considered on an individual basis. A list of required documents is included in the application packet; however, all applications must include, but are not limited to, the following documentation:
If you graduated from a medical school outside the United States or Canada, you must also include a copy of your ECFMG certificate and a copy of your certificate of registration from your country of graduation. Again, additional documentation may be requested for any applicant. Please refer to the instructions included with your application packet for further information. All applicants are required to pass the Texas Medical Jurisprudence Exam. This is one of the final steps in the licensure procedure; therefore, we must receive all of your documentation before you may sit for the exam. You will be notified by mail when it is time for you to schedule. The exam is only given in Austin at board offices most Mondays through Fridays at 8:00 am. After completing your application and passing the jurisprudence exam, you may request a Temporary License for an additional $50 fee. The Temporary License is full and unrestricted; therefore, by law you are not eligible for this license until you have met all the requirements established by the State of Texas. The board grants permanent licensure several times a year. After you have completed your application, we will inform you of the meeting in which you will be considered for permanent licensure.
